The Bill Styles Memorial Award

 

The Royal College of General Practitioners invites applications for the Bill Styles Memorial Award.

The Bill Styles Memorial Award is to be presented to a younger Member or Associate of the College. It is intended to encourage younger general practitioners to further their education either within the UK or by travel abroad. Applicants must be Members or Associates of the Royal College of General Practitioners and aged 35 years or younger at the closing date of the award.

The award is in memory of Dr Bill Styles, Chairman of Council from 1992 to 1995. The award has been made available from donations by College members and the Medical Protection Society and recognises Bill's many contributions to general practice, the College and in particular his interest in the education of younger general practitioners.

The award takes the form of a project grant which will be awarded in two stages: half at the Annual General Meeting of the College in November and half on completion of the final report. A certificate signed by the President and Chairman will be presented along with the cheque at the AGM.

Value

The value and numbers of awards each year will be determined by the adjudication panel. Each year funding is available to the total value of £4,000. However, the amount awarded each year will vary according to the quality of submissions.

Patient Participation Award - value £1000.00

 

To encourage the development of patient participation in general practice within the United Kingdom. This award is to be used to benefit the patients of a practice or to further patient participation in the United Kingdom.

Eligibility

General practices within the United Kingdom. Application/nomination may be accepted from any member of the practice team, patient group, or patient of a practice.

Criteria

The award is to be given in recognition of an innovation or significant development in patient participation and used to enhance and further this successful initiative.

Applications

Four Copies of typed applications should be submitted to the Awards Committee of the Royal College of General Practitioners and contain the following information:

Name and address of the practice Name and address of the applicant/nominator Applicant/nominator's connection with the practice

Brief description of patient participation activity being put forward How long it has been running Number of patients involved Benefits described Intended future developments

Copy of any published literature about the initiative Copy of any literature of the activity eg leaflet for patients

Intended use of the award - examples could include self help and support groups, patient information in a practice library, and development of self help records.

The same piece of work can only be used to apply for one College award within a three year period.

The information given on applications will be used solely for the purpose of supporting the objectives of the RCGP in the administration of its Awards.

Selection Process

The selection of the recipient of the award will be made at the discretion of the Awards Committee of the Royal College of General Practitioners with the inclusion of a representative of the Patients' Liaison Group of the RCGP. The Awards Committee may decide to make no award if no application is of suitable standard in which case the scheme runs for a further year. The award will be presented at the Annual General Meeting of the Royal College of General Practitioners.

Great Expectations GP Registrar Bursaries

 

"Great Expectations G.P. Registrar Bursaries" are available from an educational fund organised especially for registrars - to help you realise your brainwaves.

Aims

1. To provide an educational fund to benefit registrars nationally 2. To assist registrars evaluating an area of family medicine either (a) by undertaking a research project or (b) traveling to study an aspect of primary health care

Prizes

Bursaries - As a result of national G.P. Registrar Conferences, several awards of £200 - £500 each per annum are available for research and/or travel to study an aspect of family medicine.

Report Prize - A prize of £200 cash plus a double room for two nights at the Royal College of General Practitioners will be awarded annually for the best report on a project funded by a Bursary.

Who May Apply?

Any doctor in training for general practice, whether in hospital or general practice posts, in a recognised Vocational Training Scheme or a self-constructed scheme. The research or travel must be undertaken as a registrar or within one year of completion of a Vocational Training Scheme prior to becoming a Principal in General Practice.

Submissions consisting of a formal protocol of proposed research or travel are invited for consideration.

Individual registrars or groups of registrars may apply.

The RCGP have agreed to act as a central body to enable administration of the fund on a national basis.

How To Apply

Applications are invited in the form of a research protocol. They must be typed, double spaced on a maximum of Six sheets of A4 paper. Six copies must be supplied with a covering letter.

Information should be given under the following headings:

• Applicant Name, date of birth, address, telephone number, date of registration, GMC registration number, present appointments).

• Date of Completion of Vocational Training

• Brief Curriculum Vitae, including: medical career to date, name and address of trainer. name and address of course organiser, details of previous medical research undertaken.

• Research 'tutor' name and address of tutor who can advise at all stages of the protocol and research eg trainer, local faculty board member or from local Department of General Practice.

• Title of Project or Purpose of travel

• Details of proposed research/travel

2. Introduction (including evidence of background reading);

3. Method of investigation or plan of travel with details:

6. Estimates of expenditure eg equipment, consumables, travel:

Terms & Conditions

1. Applications for a bursary for research and/or travel are invited in the form of a formal protocol.

2. The submissions will be considered by an awards panel twice a year, and award winners notified.

3. Closing dates are 1st October and 1st March each year.

4. Award winners will be announced at the G.P. Registrars National Conference and the RCGP AGM.

5. A condition of the award is that a short written account is submitted at completion. This will be

automatically entered for the 'Report Prize'.

6. The subject of the research/travel may refer to any aspect of family medicine. The panel is keen to

encourage imaginative ideas and allow flexibility to pursue special interests: eg a travel bursary for a month abroad attached to a family practice either during vocational training jobs or just prior to taking up a principal's post.

7. The applicant should inform the panel if they have received or applied to any other financial assistance

for their submission.

The John Fry Award

This award by nomination is presented to a younger Member or Fellow of the College aged 45 years or younger at the closing date who has promoted the discipline of general practice through research and publishing as a practising GP. Closing date: 31 March 2001.

The James Mackenzie Prize

Awarded only every 5 years, this prize rewards good clinical and particularly good research work undertaken in general practice. Applications should include examples of published work in the previous 5 years before the prize. Closing date: 30 June 2001

Roche Awards

Regional and National Awards ranging from £150 to £1000 are available each year to encourage GP Registrars to undertake original audit work during the course of their vocational training. Closing date: 31 November 2001
