Closing date for applications -15th November 2002

The following opporunities are available as a 6 month extension for Registrars who have completed their training.

Rehabilitation Services - During a six month training period, GP trainees will be placed in a thirty bedded in-patient rehabilitation unit at Moseley Hall Hospital managing patients with physical and complex disabilities in origin such as brain injury, post-neuro surgery, stroke, multiple sclerosis etc..

Learning Disabilities - GP trainees will gain knowledge in the assessment and treatment of .people with a learning disability who have psychiatric illnesses, behaviour disorders and neuropsychiatric conditions such as epilepsy. There will be opportunities to gain experience in the assessment of children with developmental delay and older people with learning disabilities. There may also be opportunities to work with people with learning disabilities who offend.

Elderly Care - The in-patient service consists of an active general and specialised service where the majority of the work is sub-acute and medium term rehabilitation of older people in consultant led wards, serviced by SHOs or GP trainees. Specialist services include stroke, amputee and orthopaedic rehabilitation and respite care for very disabled individuals. The out-patients service has evolved from a traditional day hospital into specialist services for falls, stroke, continence, Parkinson's disease and a recently established pulmonary rehabilitation service.

Palliative Care - Palliative care services operate out of a purpose built NHS nursing home specialising in severe chronic disease management and terminal care in South Birmingham and the John Taylor Hospice in the Erdington area of the city which has in-patient and outpatient palliative care services and a strong home' care nursing team.

Women's Health/GUM/Family Planning - GP trainees will have the opportunity to learn about the diagnosis and management of sexually acquired infections as well as take part in community family planning clinics. Health promotion and outreach work is also undertaken and an attachment in these areas can be arranged. A postgraduate education programme is in place and the trainee would be expected to attend these sessions. Opportunities for audit and research are also available.

Paediatrics - There are two posts available - one in North Birmingham and one in South Birmingham. Arranged in conjunction with Birmingham Specialist Community Trust, these community paediatric posts have been very popular with GP's who have had little or no previous paediatric experience and wish to bridge this knowledge gap.

Genetics - We have an exciting opportunity to work with the Genetics Unit at Birmingham Maternity Hospital to give training in Clinical Genetics. This is a major growth area and the 6 months may lead to the acquisition of the skills required to be a General Practitioner with Special Interest in this subject.

Calling all GP Registrars!!

Are you

bulletcurrently in your training practice?
bulletinterested in sexual health and contraception?
bulletunsure what you'll be doing in February 2003?

We have the job for you!

At last, an opportunity to learn what the hospitals couldn't teach you! A 6 month extension to your GP training which focuses on sexual health and contraception.

This post is based in a Birmingham city-centre training practice which has had a long involvement in both sexual health and in GP training. We believe that in primary care we are ideally placed to practice sexual health care in a holistic way that encompasses contraception as well as the prevention and diagnosis of STIs . Opportunistic approaches are used regularly in an area with much evidence of sexual ill-health. The practice manages an innovative sexual health outreach project. We look after over 40 patients with HIV. We run a monthly sexual health in primary care journal club.

We are looking for a GP registrar who has done their year in general practice, and an SHO job in obstetrics and gynaecology. Despite this experience you may feel that you have had insufficient opportunity to learn the skills in sexual health that seem to be relevant to primary care.

You will do four to five sessions of general practice with us. Your other sessions will offer you broad and flexible experience encompassing:

bulletContraceptive care in a variety of settings, including young peoples' services and primary care. There will be a chance to learn and consolidate a wide range of contraceptive techniques including implants and new IUCDs.
bulletExperience in the diagnosis and management of sexually transmitted infections in GUM clinics and in the primary care setting, including approaches to prevention.
bulletKey experience in women's health relevant to primary care - for example vulval conditions; continence care; tele-colposcopy; counseling for abortion and the management of the menopause - some of these in within the practice.
bulletThe possibility of pursuing relevant areas of interest chosen from a wide range of options from men's sexual health to HIV management or prevention.

bulletWould you like more protected training and work towards MRCGP?

Shropshire VTS is offering 5 exciting opportunities to extend and develop your training for 6 months. These posts are designed for Registrars just finishing their courses and involve

splitting the training period between a local practice and a secondary care centre with attendance at the popular half day release course.

Post is based at Shelton Hospital, Shrewsbury. Applicants should have at least 6 months Psychiatry experience at SHO level.

Investigative Medicine - Based primarily at the Gastroenterology Unit, Princess Royal Hospital, Telford.
