Practice Visits: this is to enable you to visit a practice as the guest of one of the GP registrars. On this visit each group will go to the practice of one of the GPR's. The host GPR should also speak to his/her trainer for advice on how to make the visit most productive. One or more of the partners, the practice manger, the receptionist or the practice nurse may have given up their time to meet you at the practice, so not turning up without good reason is not an option!

The groups have been decided at this weeks HDR (13th Nov) and are:

1. Alex W. is ST3 host at Northumberland House, Kidderminster

Alex's group = Sandeep, Saq, Elena, Milesh, Veera, Olu

2. Lizzie, is ST3 host at Stanmore House, Kidderminster

Lizzie's group = Lars, Kate, Whye, Aarthi, Becky, Fran

3. George, is ST3 host at New Rd., Bromsgrove

George's group = Ikram, Manoj, Johnny, Muna, Charnjit, Jo

4. Caron, is ST3 host at Bridge Surgery, Redditch

Caron's group = Patrick, Sarah, Jason, Fleur, Lois, Shalini

5. Srini, is ST3 host at Dow Surgery, Redditch

Srini's group = Louise, Lisa, Tom C, Beena, Zaineb, Jane

6. Emily, is ST3 host at St.Stephen's, Redditch

Emily's group = Nick, Tom Groves, Alex P., Khairi, James, Bipin, Shambawi

Gilly has prepared a basic guide of things you might like to find out during your visit (see below). Please copy and paste this on to a Word document that you can print out and take with you. You can of course come up with your own list, add to, or alter this one

VTS Practice Visits

I have put together a list of points that I would be interested to find out about a practice on a visit. Don’t feel that you have to find answers to all of them, rather, they are pointers to the type of information you might be looking for. It might be worth trying to imagine what you would like to know about a practice if you were applying for a job there. The ethos of the practice may be more important than the on-call rota or practice income.

Each practice has developed in its own individual way and whenever I visit one I go away with new ideas to take to my practice. I hope you will find the same.

Suggested pointers:

History of the practice

The patients:

How many?

Age, sex and social characteristics

The building:

Owned or rented?

Position, parking, public transport, why this particular site?

Any plans for expansion and is there enough room currently?

Consulting rooms – are there enough?

What kit is there – e.g. for minor surgery

The Staff:

Professionals – Doctors (partners - full time/part-time, salaried doctors, other doctors – returners, retainers, registrars), nurses, others – how many WTE.

Do the partners have outside commitments? If so, to what extent?

Management – Structure and number of staff

Ancillary – How many. Do they have dual roles?

What changes to staff are being made due to nGMS?

Administrative practice meetings – How often? Who attends?

Computer system/Records:

Which system?

Paperless or paperlight? How much is put in notes?

Appointments – start and finish times – are appointments 10 minutes? Do they run separate clinics? Which ones? Nurse or doctor lead? Is there an electronic system for patients to use as they arrive rather than seeing t he receptionist?

Home Visits – How are they organised?

Lab links – How do they work?

Repeat prescribing – What is the system?

Summaries – how complete?

Education:

How do individuals and the practice team educate themselves.

Staff appraisals/development reviews – how involved are medical staff?

Is the practice involved with undergraduate teaching and F2 teaching and to what extent?

nGMS/PMS

Is the practice GMS/PMS – any idea of why different contract chosen?

How is new contract affecting patients/staff/doctors?

How many additional/enhanced services offered?

How many QOF points achieved last year and anticipated for this year? How different is the work for the various members of the team since the new contract was implemented?

Hot Topics: As you can see, the hot topic slots have been pre-allocated. This is to make sure that everyone is given the opportunity to present a hot topic. If you are unable to attend on the day that your hot topic is due, then it is up to you to arrange a swap with someone else.

Timetable, further details

If there are any topics you would like to see in the timetable, please e-mail them!
