24.09.09 Depression session – Aims and Objectives

Group 2 Thursday 24th September 2009

Curriculum statement 13 – care of people with mental health problems

-          Symptoms – anxiety, depression, feeling tired all the time, insomnia, multiple somatic complaints

-          Conditions – depression, anxiety disorder, potential for overlap of symptoms eg with dementia

-          Investigation – use of rating scales and other aids to evaluate severity, screening for depression

-          Treatment – pharmacology, CBT, counselling

 -          Emergencies – threatened or attempted suicide, risk assessment, mental state assessment, locally based services and acute teams, how to access and what they do.  

-          Consultation skills – an opportunity to build on current level of expertise and practice some of the less common scenarios

 

01.10.09 Aims and Objectives for Group 1's session on antenatal care:

- To be aware of the NICE giudelines on routine antenatal care.

- To know what needs to be covered in a booking visit.

- To be able to manage common problems in pregnancy and know when to refer into secondary care.

- To know about screening and diagnostic tests available in pregnancy.

- To be aware of the importance of pre-conceptual counselling.

 

08.10.09 Aims and Objectives for Group 3's session on contraception:

- To be aware of the NICE guidelines about Long Acting Reversible Contraception

- To know the level of effectiveness of different types of contraceptive methods.

- To recognise the common problems associated with different contraceptive methods.

- To be aware of some of the ethical issues surrounding different contraceptive methods.

 

15.10.09 Learning outcomes/objectives for Thursday's teaching on GENETICS IN PRIMARY CARE and some pre-reading.

 

1. Develop understanding of the mechanism of genetic disease and how this can interact with the environment to create disease 2. Be able to recognise families and individuals at risk of genetic disease and be able to correctly reassure those that don't 3. Be able to correctly draw and interpret a family tree 4.Awareness of local/regional facilities for the assessment of families and individuals with genetic disease or potential genetic disease.

5. Awareness of the ethical, legal, financial, psychological and moral issues surrounding screening for and diagnosing genetic disease.

6. Know where to find accurate and reliable information to help patients with difficult decisions
